There was a time when Jerry Dipoto had to assess how it fits in Arizona Diamondbacks, a team in transition economies around him, when it seemed that adapts to any.
Baseball jobs tend to come and go, they are only slightly more stable than one job against less than Wendy.
So, if not in Arizona for pitcher brilliant baseball man, who had his previous time in the field and in the office to know the result, perhaps some cost.
The Diamondbacks had difficulty in the winter with an interim CEO - Dipoto - and an interim field manager, a team with 97 losses, which attracted nearly two million fans, and an organizational philosophy - or method to use it - it was more reasonable.
Summer, and despite the long-term contracts as well as the general manager Josh Byrnes and director AJ Hinch was shot. Dipoto is based Byrnes'. Kirk Gibson took the top step.
And everyone connected.
Dipoto was asked to move the salary, as he did when the trade deadline, bringing Big League pitching and depth of the organization for Dan Haren pitch (notes) and Edwin Jackson (notes). Gibson was asked to bring stability and passion for the canoe, as he usually does in spite of a flammable and blocked Bullpen trend lineup.
So what?
For three years, the Diamondbacks have shown a trend back in wins. During the last two, which finished last in the National League West.
They needed more. Further changes.
Their young players, men like Chris Young, Justin Upton (notes), Mark Reynolds (notes), Stephen Drew (Notes) and Miguel Montero (notes), most of these were, but had not reached perfection, and has demonstrated. Pitching was the most horrible, young and old.
The Diamondbacks wore the look of a team that will disappear before his time never came.
Club then hired a general manager Kevin Towers. He had built the winners of San Diego. He knew that the West and even with the cool nickname "Gunslinger." Soon he had to keep Gibson.
This meant Dipoto was in limbo. He did not get the position of GM, but he got his moment to reflect. He could return as vice president of scouting and player development. Or not. He could not see through this. Or not.
"At any time, change is difficult for many people," Dipoto said this week, the Diamondbacks, then the first seven games. "Want to be a team player. I felt like I was part of building something here."
Owner Ken Kendrick wanted to stay and continue what he started the business in mid-summer.
"If you feel a part of it," Kendrick asked, "Why do you want to get away now?"
Dipoto had no answer.
What was the feeling that despite appearances, the Diamondbacks were ahead. Reconstructed with a pencil, Ian Kennedy (notes) and Daniel Hudson (note), a year behind the young men, and Gibson for a full season, had a sense, this was the last place team more.
"Apparently it was a good decision for me personally," said Dipoto.
Not that the Diamondbacks three weeks since their first division title in four years, craft one of the worst big impression the first history of recent decades, this went from 97 losses, although part of it.
But because of the Diamondbacks, no matter what happens in October, could be here for a while. And while people will soon be faced with the positioning and reputation in the resurgence of the back D ', and while the men as towers and Gibson and Byrnes and former general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. and former scouting director Mike Rizzo and current president Derrick Hall each get a piece, do not forget Dipoto, the man of the company.
A couple of months of lost, he got up and made the tough decisions that trade two pitchers, when everyone in the game, knew he had. Minor league depth is not at all sexy in major league cities, but it works organizations, especially mid-market organizations. "At that time, you really can not explain it," said Dipoto. "Not many people wake up in Arizona throwing on a hat BayBears mobile."
Hudson is a game winning 15-24 Saunders is a reasonable back-end starter. Both of these files behind Ian Kennedy, who has flourished in parts of New York Yankee ace Diamondback disappointing. It takes place two years ago, three-way trade that brought Kennedy - Detroit Tigers Curtis Granderson sent (notes), and the Yankees - and now it seems that all three teams will ride the share of trade in the postseason. "I do not think that it is unfairly labeled the usual stuff like" Dipoto said Kennedy.
Yes, there are many things that are entitled to the Diamondbacks, after almost everything went wrong for two years. Upton has become a star. Torres sets the bullpen in about a week. And almost every night become more normal.
After 140 games, what stands out is Dipoto the shops after the numbers.
"If this team is about anything," he says, "his character. It's makeup. Grinder is a real club."
Suddenly, the hope, too.
So do not forget Jerry Dipoto.
