Andy Murray hopes to reach the US Open last came to an end as Rafael Nadal has surpassed in four sets to set up a meeting with Novak Djokovic.
British number one lost 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3 in three hours and 24 minutes to wait for his first Grand Slam title continues.
Murray has not had a meeting in Spain in the first two, and despite the rally in the third, has wilted in the fourth.
Djokovic faces Nadal on Monday after the Serb beat Roger Federer.
"Tonight I played my best match so far and am very happy to be in the final," said world number two.
"The beginning of the fourth set was very important because Andy had a break point, but I managed to save him."
Murray beats Nadal at this stage in 2008 in order to obtain the maiden Grand Slam final, but Nadal had won each of the previous four times, and it was soon clear why.
The second seed had a clear game plan and stick to it, has played the most aggressive from the first point, a concentrated Murray, weaknesses, and remained quiet the whole time.
However, Murray struggled to execute its strategy, lack of intensity, was able to take Nadal out of his comfort zone and is wasted energy reprimand.
The Scot dug deep to save a break point and stick in a game eight minutes to open the service and saved a try of his own set of six.
But Nadal was unable to capitalize and came up with a winner right great many - and was soon over.
